Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District: Advancing sustainability and efficiency through secure destruction

The background

Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) provides healthcare services to communities across the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions of New South Wales.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, data security, and operational efficiency, ISLHD partnered with Grace to manage confidential waste securely and sustainably in compliance with privacy laws and patient confidentiality requirements.

Within the Clinical Documentation Improvement Analyst (CDIA) team, heavy administrative workloads and manual file handling created inefficiencies and risks. The team needed to reduce paper use, strengthen data security, and streamline processes while supporting ISLHD’s sustainability goals.

Grace secure destruction services played a key role in supporting ISLHD’s internal sustainability project. Working collaboratively, Grace provided essential information and support that enabled the CDIA team to transition toward more digital, paper-light workflows. This shift significantly reduced the team’s environmental footprint while improving efficiency and confidentiality.

Grace’s responsive and supportive approach ensured the project was delivered seamlessly. Their guidance helped the CDIA team meet strict patient data security standards while achieving their sustainability objectives.

The collaboration between ISLHD and Grace delivered measurable, impactful results:

  • Reduced CO2 emissions by 2.2 tonnes – the equivalent of saving 90 eucalyptus trees.
  • Reclaimed 384 productivity hours previously spent on manual administrative work.
  • Improved data security and patient confidentiality through digitised workflows.
  • Enabled faster, more efficient collaboration and access to patient information.
  • Contributed to ISLHD’s broader sustainability and digital transformation goals.

Following the project, the CDIA team can now provide faster, higher-level data analysis to support service planning across ISLHD, leading to more efficient resource allocation and improved patient outcomes.

“Grace is a highly efficient service that provides sustainable solutions for all of your health information management needs. They are incredibly helpful and consistently provide a personalised service, always taking the time to promptly respond to me whenever I contacted them and ensure I was supported. Our collaboration allowed me to complete a sustainability project that reduced 2.2 tonnes of CO2 and reclaimed 384 hours of productivity. Thank you, Grace!”
